William of Wykeham
(1324–1404)
   Bishop and Educator.
   William was born in Wickham in Hampshire. He had an important public career, becoming Bishop of Winchester in 1366 and Chancellor of England in 1367. Although he was deprived of the Chancellorship in 1371 and was accused before Parliament of misconduct, he was restored to favour in 1377 and became Chancellor again in 1389. He is remembered as a great patron of education. He founded New College in the University of Oxford which opened in 1386 and a school for poor scholars in Winchester. This was the first independent foundation of its kind and was the model for several others. Its motto, remembered and perhaps acted upon, is ‘Manners makyth man’.
